Authored by: Mantel CaptureCAMBRIDGE, Mass, June 5, 2026 – Today, we’re proud to share that TerraSpark’s proposed Energy Campus in Grant County, West Virginia has been selected to receive up to $18.5 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Energy, with Mantel serving as the project’s carbon capture technology partner.
For Mantel, this is an exciting milestone because it shows how carbon capture funding is being used for innovative, new carbon capture approaches. It also reflects something even bigger: where the future of industry and large-scale carbon capture deployment is headed next.
Carbon capture built for heavy industry
Mantel was founded on a simple idea: carbon capture should be efficient, economical, and scalable to help deliver reliable and affordable energy to the world.While carbon capture has been proven for decades, widespread adoption has been limited by cost and energy consumption.
Our molten-borate technology was developed to address those challenges directly, capturing up to 98% of CO₂ emissions, like it will at the TerraSpark Energy Campus. Our technology also reduces the traditional energy penalty associated with carbon capture by over 97%, all while enabling affordable, firm power without sacrificing reliability.
Coal will continue to power economies for decades
The world is now facing two realities: demand for reliable electricity is growing rapidly, and, at the same time, the world must significantly reduce emissions. Coal is deeply embedded in global energy systems and will continue to exist for decades, particularly in industrially strong economies.
While renewable energy will play a role in the future grid, coal infrastructure will remain an important part of global electricity generation and must be abated for the sake of the climate. In this era of energy abundance, Mantel’s molten borate carbon capture technology addresses this gap, enabling coal-fired power plants and other industrial facilities to operate with dramatically lower emissions.
We believe that wherever coal operates, it should operate with carbon capture. The TerraSpark Energy Campus provides a glimpse into what that future can look like, with the project combining 1.6 gigawatts of next-generation coal-fired power generation with Mantel’s molten borate carbon capture technology. Projects like this can help provide reliable and affordable electricity while dramatically lowering emissions from power generation.
What this means for scaling carbon capture and emissions reduction
We view this project as more than a single deployment. It reflects growing recognition that carbon capture is an important part of the broader energy transition. It demonstrates that reliable power generation and emissions reductions can advance together.
And, most importantly, it highlights an opportunity for the United States to lead in the development, deployment, and export of advanced carbon capture technologies and everything that comes with it: domestic jobs, manufacturing capacity, and energy technology leadership.
Looking ahead
While there is still significant work ahead, we’re grateful for the confidence placed in the project and excited to continue working alongside TerraSpark, Sargent & Lundy, Babcock & Wilcox, and Advanced Resources International, to bring next-generation carbon capture technologies into real-world operation.
In the meantime, Mantel is continuing to deploy across a range of industries, including oil & gas, natural gas power generation, pulp & paper, among others, through projects that are expected to scale to millions of tonnes annually.
